CDC says travelers should avoid Puerto Rico, Switzerland, other destinations due to COVID

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has added two U.S. territories to its list of destinations with “very high” COVID-19 risk, advising Americans against traveling to Puerto Rico and Guam, among other destinations in CDC Travel Health Notices issued Monday.

The agency also upgraded Switzerland, Saint Lucia, Azerbaijan, Estonia and North Macedonia to Level 4 on Monday. Level 4 is the CDC’s highest risk category. The State Department also added those five countries to its “Level 4: Do Not Travel” list due to COVID concerns.

U.S. Adds Bahamas and 5 More Destinations to Highest COVID-19 Travel Warning Level

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention raised six more destinations to its highest travel warning level on Monday, including popular vacation hotspot the Bahamas.

The agency raised the Bahamas to a “Level 4,” warning travelers they should avoid heading to the island nation, especially if they are unvaccinated. Destinations are classified as a “Level 4” if there are 500 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people.

Similarly, the Department of State issued a travel advisory on Monday mirroring the CDC’s message.

Lake Tahoe Prepares For Emergency As Wildfire Threatens Region

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) — Some 14,000 firefighters facing changing weather conditions battled more than a dozen large wildfires across California, including a growing blaze that was slowly pushing toward the Lake Tahoe resort region.

Winds and temperatures were expected to pick up in coming days while humidity drops, adding to the challenges endured by crews working in rugged terrain.

“That’s what’s closing the window of opportunity we’ve had to make progress and really get hold of the fire,” said Daniel Berlant, assistant deputy director of the state firefighting agency.
